DISPATCHES

MARCH 2010

BY THE TIME most of you read this, this year’s “WESTCOASTER” will already be over and Helen, Patrick and yours truly will be in Boston meeting two of our favourite US dealers… Matt Murphy of “Hobby Bunker” and George Guerriero of “Minutemen”.

After Boston we’ll head off to Tony Ciccarello’s “Toy Soldier Gallery” right-next to West Point. Following on from there it’s Louis Badolato’s “Toy Soldier Symposium” and then down to old “San Antone”.

So, as you might expect I’m actually writing this particular “DISPATCHES” the day before we all fly off to Los Angeles and the “WESTCOASTER” itself.

I hope to spring a few pleasant surprises on dealers and collectors alike, so, without further ado, let battle commence…

1.      WHAT’S NEW IN MARCH?

A. “Geronimo finally jumps!”

A wee bit later than we originally intended but here they are…

D. “VIVE LA FRANCE 1914”

Finally, K&C has mobilized its “L’Armee francaise” and les Poilus march off to battle resplendent in their colourful uniforms of long blue coats, red pantaloons and scarlet and blue kepis…

This first release focuses on the soldiers marching to the front as they would have appeared in those first days and weeks of the war to end all wars!

FW060 “General Joffre”

The ample figure of “Papa” Joffre inspired confidence in the public, his men and his fellow officers. Cool, calm and collected, Joffre was a “steady hand at the tiller” of the French Army in those early days. He is best known for regrouping the retreating Allied Armies and defeating the Germans at the First Battle of the Marne in 1914.

FW061 “General Foch”

Proud and confident this mounted figure leads his troops forward.

Music plays an important part in virtually every army… including the French. This Drum Major instructs his musicians…

FW069 “Drummer”

FW070 “Bugler”

FW071 “Auf Wiedersen”

This is the first of a unique series of poignant little First World War vignettes depicting troops of three of the principal countries departing for the War.

This German “Soldat” tries to comfort his weeping fiancé as his Regiment departs.

FW072 “Au Revoir”

A different country… a different parting… As his wife holds his rifle this Poilu fondly cradles his small baby. Will he ever see them again?

FW073 “Goodbye-ee”

A Scottish soldier embraces his sweetheart as he goes off to war.

AVAILABILITY:   Mid March

E. “The Desert Village”

Two more great (and useful looking) additions to the four already released pieces… Together they make a fine setting for Ancient EgyptThe CrusadesNapoleon in EgyptWW2 North Africa… and even modern-day Iraq and Afghanistan.

SP035 “The Village House”

SP036 “The Wall”

AVAILABILITY:   Mid March

F. “COSSACKS!”

Russian Cossack cavalry have the unique distinction of having fought both for and against Stalin’s Red Army during World War Two!

On the German side they fought with great valour and ruthlessness especially on Anti-Partisan duties in Russia itself… and in the Balkans.

At the end of the war most of these German Cossack units retreated westwards and wishfully surrendered to the British Forces. They were then summarily handed over to the Russians… expecting and receiving little mercy.

WS142 “Cossack Feldgendarmerie with Prisoner”

A dismounted Cossack field policeman with an unfortunate Partisan suspect.

WS143 “Mounted Cossack Officer”

Wearing the traditional Cossack costume (with German badges) this officer, sabre in hand, is issuing orders.

WS144 “Cossack Scout”

WS145 “Cossack holding Rifle”

Looking to the right this Cossack, rifle held steady, is on patrol.

Looking to the left and with his rifle across the front of his saddle this is another member of the patrol.

WS147 “Standing Cossack and Horse”

This young Cossack cavalryman is awaiting inspection.

WS148 “Cossack Pointing”

Another member of the patrol indicating while making his report.

WS149 “Dismounted Cossack NCO”

AVAILABILITY:   Mid-Late March

2.      NOW, WHAT’S HAPPENING IN APRIL?

A. “Remember The Alamo!”

With one of K&C’s two flagship stores in San Antonio, just a few yards from the legendary chapel, how could we ever forget it!!!

Here’s our latest offerings… Three brand-new renderings of the three most famous Alamo defenders—Crockett… Travis and Bowie.

RTA048 “Fighting Jim Bowie”

RTA049 “Buckskin Davy Crockett”

RTA050 “Gallant Colonel Travis”

These new pieces replace the earlier versions of our heroes. (Now retired)

AVAILABILITY:   Early April

Opposing these three brave defenders of the doomed mission are FOUR dramatic mounted figures of Mexican Dragoons of Santa Anna’s army…

RTA051 “Officer charging w/sword”

RTA052 “Dragoon w/lance forward”

RTA053 “Dragoon w/lance thrusting down”

RTA054 “Dragoon w/lance held up”

AVAILABILITY:   Early April

B. “Market Garden Airborne Reinforcements”

After a long delay (apologies for that) our eagerly-awaited para reinforcements… for one of K&C’s most collected series… “Operation Market Garden”.

MG028 “The Big Jump”

For the very first time… two of our British Paras (both different) jumping into the hell that was Arnhem. Like their U.S. airborne comrades these Brits descend on fully deployed ‘chutes ready for anything…

MG029 “Radio Jeep”

Jeeps were essential to these airborne soldiers and so were radios… Fortunately the jeeps worked… unfortunately the radios did not! However, it’s all part of the “ARNHEM” story. Here an officer (with Sten gun ready) and his driver ferry their radio operator around the drop zone trying to get a better signal!

MG030 “Army Photographic Unit Cameraman”

Sgt. Dennis Smith kneels down to film some of the action during the doomed battle.

MG031 “Mortar Team”

One of the iconic images of the battle were the photos of a lone British Mortar Team in action with their 81mm mortar. This is our tribute to them.

MG032 “Captured!”

Sadly all too many of the British 1st. Airborne Division at Arnhem ended up killed, wounded or captured.

Here, a casually smoking SS Panzer Grenadier guards two Paras… one seriously wounded. A poignant little set.

Look out for more Paras later!

AVAILABILITY:   Mid April

C. “D. DAY MINUS ONE”

The day before the “day of days”… All over Southern England at docksides… on airfields… in hundreds of Army camps the soldiers, sailors and airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force wait for the order… “Let’s Go!”

DD126 “D. Day Minus One”

Three US Army “Rangers” stand on a cold, wet English dockside waiting to board their Landing craft that will ferry them to France…

DD127 “Standing Ranger”

His rifle resting at his feet another Ranger contemplates the coming battle.

DD128 “Standing B.A.R. Gunner”

One more Ranger holding his B.A.R. machine gun.

DD129 “Medic”

Holding his folded stretcher this Medic prepares to board.

DD132 “US Beachmaster Set”

A 2-man US Navy team test out their equipment.

DD133 “Marching Ranger”

Rifle slung over his shoulder this GI heads for the landing craft.

DD134 “Marching Ranger Officer”

This officer is leading his troops into position.

Not only were American getting ready for the big invasion so were their British Allies…

DD135 “Sherman Firefly”

Another long-awaited and much-requested piece of Armour… the Sherman Firefly… A unique blend of American know-how and British ingenuity. The war-winning Sherman mounting the proven 76mm gun… At last an Allied tank that could take on (and destroy) all those Tigers and Panthers!

Our model is in the markings of “B” Squadron of the 2nd. Armoured Battalion of the Irish Guards, part of the famous Guards Armoured Division.

This K&C Firefly comes with two crew figures and a detachable radio Antenna and “back-pack” of extra supplies.

DD136 “Dismounted British Tank Crewmen”

Three superb “portraits” of typical British “tankies”… goes great alongside the Firefly.

AVAILABILITY:   Mid April

D. “Here comes Johnny Turk!”

British, Australian and New Zealand soldiers fighting in the Middle East during WW1, had a healthy respect for their Turkish Enemies.

First at Gallipoli then in Palestine and elsewhere in the region, “Johnny Turk” was a formidable adversary.

These new Turkish infantry in action are a “companion-release” to our first Australian Light Horse figures released in December 2009.

All of these six figures are in defensive fighting poses. More are in the pipeline… including artillery and historic personalities.

B. “Germany’s War at Sea”

Well, here it is our newest and biggest release of German “KRIEGSMARINE” figures and fighting accessories… if you can call a midget U boat an accessory! 13 individual figures (including 3 special personalities), two very different vehicles and, of course, our first-ever submarine.

KM001 “Flag Signaller”

Whether on sea or on dry land the ability to make signals using only flags was a time-honoured naval tradition.

KM002 “KorvettenKapitan Gunther Prien”

Gunther Prien was one of the outstanding U Boat aces of the early part of WW2 and the first to win the coveted “Knight’s Cross”. His submarine U47 sank over 200,000 tons of Allied Shipping including the British battleship, “HMS Royal Oak” at anchor in Scapa Flow, Britain’s northern fleet anchorage.

Prien and U47 went missing on March 7, 1941 and no official record states how or why he and his U boat were lost. No trace of him or his boat has ever been found!

KM003 “Lookout”

This Kriegsmarine sailor is on watch… padded life jacket, steel helmet and flash hood in place.

KM004 “Naval Field Police”

All branches of the German armed forces had their own “chained-dogs” to enforce base security and discipline.

Our Petty Officer carries both a pistol and a sub-machine gun.

KM005 “Petty Officer with Whistle”

KM006 “Seaman on Guard”

Part of a ship or naval base security detail.

This sailor is in summer parade uniform.

KM010(SL) “SEEHUND”

Our very latest “Strictly Limited” release… the type 127 U Boot “SEEHUND” (The Seal). This was the most successful of Nazi Germany’s mini submarines created during WW2.

Designed in 1944 and operated by a two-man crew the Kriegsmarine operated these boats during the closing nine months of the war.

Each midget U boat carried two “G7e torpedoes” on either side of the hull.

Although a total of 1,000 Seehunds were ordered just 285 entered service. Our K&C model is finished in a typical mottled “leopard” camouflage of sea green on a light sea gray background.

Each boat comes complete with its own special wheeled transport “cradle” and towing rod.

Just 750 of this unique little U Boat are being produced.

KM012 “Admiral Karl Donitz”

A second K&C version of the venerated leader of the Kriegsmarine’s submarine arm. Here the admiral is dressed in his everyday working uniform and stands, arms folded, talking to one of his men.

KM013 “Korvettenkapitan Otto Kretschmer”

Another of Donitz’s most famous U Boat aces, Kretschmer and boats under his command sank almost 300,000 tons of Allied shipping between 1939 and 1941 when he was captured.

He rejoined the Bundesmarine in 1955 finally retiring in 1965 as a “Flotilla Admiral”.

Sadly, he died in a boating accident in 1998.

KM014 “Kapitanleutnant… shouting”

Wearing typical seagoing uniform this young officer is issuing orders.

KM015 “Submariner”

Wearing a life vest and carrying his toolkit this U boat man is about to board his vessel.

KM016 “Kriegsmarine BMW327”

This German naval officer sits comfortably in his BMW 327 Sports Car… Is he going on leave or just returning to duty?

Our Famo is in field gray and is designed to pull and position our “SEEHUND” for launching and recovery.

The Driver is included.

LW009 “Marching Officer w/ Flag”

LW010 “Marching Airman w/ Rifle”

LW011 “Standing Airman presenting arms”

LW012 “Standing Officer Saluting”

LW013 “Standing Airman w/ Rifle”

LW014 “Walking Officer”

LW015 “Standing at Attention”

LW016 “Luftwaffe General Erhard Milch”

Originally a friend of Herman Goering, Milch owed a lot to the Reichsmarschall. He was thought to be half-Jewish yet still achieved high rank in the Luftwaffe. Eventually he fell out of favour but still managed to survive both the war and a brief spell as a jailed war criminal. He died in 1972.

LW017 “Major Gunther Rall”

This is the second sculpt we have made of this outstanding fighter pilot. Gunther Rall (1918-2009) was the third most successful fighter ace in history with 275 victories (241 on the Eastern Front). He flew over 600 combat missions, was shot down 8 times and wounded 3.

He claimed all of his victories in the Me.109.

After the war he rejoined the “new” Luftwaffe in 1955 rising to the rank of Generalleutnant before retiring. In 2004 he wrote his memoirs and died, aged 91 earlier in 2009.

B. “Down to earth with a bang!”

From battles in the air during WW2 to battles on the ground during the Age of Napoleon… “L’artillerie à pied”… “Foot Artillery”.

Napoleon often said that “artillery is the key to most successful battles”. And, to that effect K&C is releasing five very useful (and adaptable) sets add to your field artillery gun line.

NA195 “Cannon Set”

Three different “Line Artillerymen” serve a classic 12-pounder cannon. All are wearing the uniform of 1813-1815.

NA196 “Artillery Command Set”

A standing saluting NCO awaits orders from his mounted officer.

NA197 “Alternative Gun Crew”

These three extra figures can be added or combined to form a larger gun crew or to serve NA198 “The French Howitzer”.

NA198 “The French Howitzer”

The short, stubby barrel is easily recognized as a 6 inch Howitzer. It utilizes the same standard gun carriage as the 12-pounder cannon.

NA199 “Classic Napoleon”

Bonaparte in his usual battlefield dress of gray greatcoat over his Chasseur a Cheval green uniform. The Emperor surveys the scene.

C. “From Waterloo to Waterless!”

Now we fly you to the barren, arid wastes of North Africa during WW2… with our very latest British 8th. Army releases.

EA040 “Major Paddy Mayne S.A.S.”

“Paddy” Mayne was one of the true legends of WW2… The winner of no less than 4 D.S.O.’s he served with the Special Air Service almost from the formation of the Regiment.

Brave… bold… and sometimes reckless “Paddy” Mayne was responsible for personally destroying over 130 German and Italian aircraft on raids on Axis airfields. While fighting he could be superb… out of the line he could be extremely difficult. A complex but very brave soldier.

Here he’s dressed in typical casual S.A.S. style. Desert

EA041 “Universal Carrier”

One of the war’s most famous British vehicles these little carriers usually mounted a Bren Gun… Ours however has adopted the heavier, belt-fed Vickers Machine Gun. In 7th.Armoured Division markings (“The Desert Rats”) it comes with 2 crew.

EA042 “The Desert Bentley”

How this pre war “touring Bentley” came to end up with the S.A.S is interesting… it was won in a poker game in Alexandria. Originally owned by a wealthy British Cavalry officer he lost it (along with a great deal of money) to a friend of “Paddy” Mayne’s. When “Paddy” saw it he had S.A.S mechanics overhaul it… repaint it… and customize it (guns and all) for Desert operations.

K&C’s version comes with a seated S.A.S. driver.

AVAILABILITY:   Early January

D. “Off We Go into the Wild Blue Yonder…”
From the sun bleached desert to the gray and rainswept skies over Britain in 1943…

K&C’s various Air Force series have, so far, focused mainly on the German Luftwaffe and British Royal Air Force… We feel it’s about time the YANKS had a go as well… And here they are… nine sets of figures and individuals plus an iconic U.S. fighter plane…

AF003 “Captain Brett Cutler”

This good-looking officer with movie star style is wearing the popular “Burberry Trench Coat” to ward off the damp and cold British weather. He’s also sporting a crushed “50-Mission” hat as well.

AF004 “Air Force MP’s”

Two, at attention, U.S. Military Policemen, easily identified by the arm brassards and all-white uniform accoutrements.

AF005 “Crew Chief”

A saluting NCO in service dress, clipboard in hand.

AF006 “Army Air Corps Mechanics”

Three different GI’s going about their usual tasks on a busy airfield.

AF007 “Lt. Dick Rabb”

By D. Day this young fighter “jock” had 12 “kills” to his credit flying a plane called “HOT PANTS”.

AF008 “The New Boy”

A newly-commissioned officer prepares to join his first squadron… always a nervous time.

AF009 “Flying Cowboy”

Capt. Nick “Cowboy” Magura with 11 “kills” demonstrates with his hands how he shot down his latest victim.

AF010 “Pointing MP”

This “snowdrop” indicating the way around the airfield.

AF011 “P.51B “Mustang””

This 1:30 scale polystone and metal model pays tribute to what many consider to be the finest fighter plane of WW2… the North American P.51 “Mustang”. Our “B” model aircraft is the razor-back version and is in the personal markings of Major (later Colonel) James H. Howard of the 354th.Fighter Group. Howard’s “DING HAO” (The Best) sports 6 German “kills” plus 6 Japanese ones. Maj. Howard flew with the American “Flying Tigers” in China before America entered the war. He was the only U.S. fighter pilot in the European Theatre of Operations to win the Congressional Medal of Honour.

Our model comes with “gear down” and a figure of Maj. Howard in the cockpit.

P.P.* Special Note: Just 500 of this particular model are being produced

G. PALM TREE APOLOGY

Sorry Guys we had hoped to have our Desert Palm Trees available for dispatch this month but alas due to other production priorities we have had to slightly delay the release until March 2010.

2.      “COMING IN FEBRUARY”

A. February for K&C is “KRIEGSMARINE MONTH”… A whole month devoted to something very different… our very first submarine (or U Boot we should say) plus 13 individual figures (including 3 special “personalities”) and two very different vehicles.

Let’s get started…

KM007 “Patrolling Seaman”

Same as above… but moving.

KM008 “Radioman”

KM009 “Sentry Duty (Parade Dress)

AVAILABILITY:   Early/Mid February

KM017 “Sd.Kfz.9 Famo Recovery Vehicle”

More than 2,500 of these heavy recovery vehicles were produced during the war in many various versions. Although most were used in Artillery or Armoured units a fair number were used by the Kriegsmarine to move heavy items around naval bases and dockyards.

Our Famo is in field gray and is designed to pull and position our “SEEHUND” for launching and recovery.

The Driver is included.

A camouflaged Wehrmacht version will also be available later.

AVAILABILITY:   Early March

B. “Streets of Old Hong Kong”
As per usual there’s a few nice offerings for our “Chinese” collectors…

HK183 “The Clown”

Wearing a giant paper mache mask this street clown is a familiar sight at any Chinese celebration.

HK185 “Celebrating Chinese New Year”

A really beautifully detailed set… Two grandparents accept special gifts from their children and one of their grandchildren.

This set includes chairs and exquisite miniature Chinese furniture.

HK186 “Forbidden Delights”

A young child tries to sneak up and get a taste of the delicious food presented on the table. This set also includes four chairs.

HK187 “Gleesome Threesome”

Three little kids… full of mischief.

AVAILABILITY:   Early February

C. “GO… GO… GO!”

It’s time to return to Normandy in 1944 with these two great little sets…

DD122 “Jumping Screaming Eagles”

Two 101st. Airborne paratroopers in all-new poses descend on their fully-deployed canopies… somewhere in Normandy in the early hours of June 6, 1944.

DD123 “Jumping All Americans”

Another two… completely different… US 82nd. Airborne troopers float down somewhere near Ste. Mere Eglise… June 6, 1944.

AVAILABILITY:   Late February or Early March

                                Let’s hope FEB.

3.      “BEING RETIRED THIS MONTH”

Eh… Absolutely nothing… now that is a surprise!!!

On that cheerful note I’ll say adios for now, hiyo silver and away…

NOVEMBER 2009 DISPATCHES

by Tony Neville 3. November 2009 04:10

NOVEMBER 2009

DISPATCHES

 Hi Guys,

Well Chicago seems like a distant memory although it’s only just over 5 weeks ago!

A great time was had by all and all four of us… Helen, Patrick, Gordon and me got the chance to meet literally hundreds of K&C collectors from not only the States but Canada… Mexico… France… U.K…. Germany and Australia.

It made me realize just how international this great hobby and business of ours really is!

After Chicago we visited New Orleans where, I’m happy to say, the National WW2 Museum there, now sells K&C in their superb gift store.

After New Orleans it was onto San Antonio and a great “Meet ‘n’ Greet” at Kings X with some of our Texas collectors.

Finally, up to Los Angeles and back to Hong Kong. One of our longest K&C visits to the U.S. (almost 3 1/2 weeks) but certainly one of the best.

Now enough travel news… let’s get down to brass tacks!

 1.      WHAT’S AVAILABLE IN NOVEMBER?

As forecast in October’s “DISPATCHES” a whole big batch of Napoleonic Coldstream Guards reinforcements…

A. “NULLI SECUNDUS or SECOND TO NONE”

The motto of The Coldstream Guards and one of K&C’s most popular Napoleonic series… 12 brand-new Coldstreamers provide reinforcements for our earlier first British Coldstream Guards release… These new soldiers (all except one small 2-figures set) are sold individually and, for the most part, illustrate troops either a) moving into the line or b) back at barracks on parade or even c) on the march. The choice is yours!

 NA184 “Mounted Officer”

 NA185 “Walking Flagbearer”

 NA186 “Marching Officer w/ Sword”

 NA187 “Marching Sergeant”

 NA188 “Marching Pioneer”

 NA189 “Marching Guardsman”

 NA190 “Guardsman At Attention”

 NA191 “Saving The Boy”

Here, a veteran Guardsman steps out of the battle to carry his young wounded ensign back to the Surgeon’s tent…

NA192 “Camp Follower”

 NA193 “Advancing Guardsman”

 NA194 “Marching Flagbearer”

 Available NOW!

B. “Back to The Bulge… and Bastogne”

From outside Brussels on the lush green fields of Waterloo we journey to the frozen forest of the Ardennes in the winter of 1944… let battle commence…

 BBA030 “M3A2 Half-Track”

K&C’s first all-new U.S. Half-Track for a few years and one of the most often requested... and here it is!

This classic armoured troop transport served U.S. Forces and their Allies loyally throughout the War and even into the late 1970’s (with the Israeli Army).

Our GI version comes complete with a driver and a standing .50 calibre machine gunner and his crew-served weapon. This winter-version also has a detachable canvas cover for the troop compartment.

A towing hook at the rear of the vehicle is also suitable for pulling…

BBA031 “The 105mm Field Gun Set”

A superb model of the most famous field piece of the U.S. Army in WW2. Our “105” has rolling wheels… moveable trail arms plus 3 gunners to fire the artillery piece. The barrel is in a fixed position for firing and transporting.

 BBA032 “Artillery Add-On Set”

2 additional Artillerymen are also available to crew-serve this great field piece. In addition we also supply extra ammo boxes and a pile of shell tubes (used for carrying the rounds).

 BBA033 “U.S. Artilleryman”

A lone “Gunner”, rifle slung “humps” three more tubes of rounds forward to the guns.

BBA034 “Kneeling with Field Telephone”

A kneeling corporal listens for a “fire order” and grid coordinates for his buddies about to shell an enemy location.

BBA035 “Winter Motorcycle MP”

A long overdue addition to our U.S. Forces and our first new MP on a motorcycle for many years.

This MP is on the road, somewhere between Belgium and Luxembourg giving out directions (as MP’s like to do). He’s well-wrapped up against the winter weather as well!

BBA036 “Half-Track Passengers”

A really great little 3-man grouping… Two sitting GI’s and their Nazi Prisoner. These guys can be seated in a variety of ways inside our new Half-Track or posed outside in a display or diorama… very useful!

AVAILABILITY: Mid November

C. “THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD…”

For a long time the cofounders of K&C, Laura McAllister Johnson and myself have wanted to design and produce a series of figures and diorama accessories that tell the story of the most unique man that ever walked this earth.

This story has been told in many different ways and in many different media… booksplays moviestelevision series and, of course, in nativity scenes, for hundreds of years.

Our intention is to tell it in all-metal, hand-painted 1:30 scale.

We begin the story with “the Nativity” but that is only the beginning… We will continue the story of Jesus through his childhood into manhood and the journey from Bethlehem to Nazareth and to Jerusalem… From a simple carpenter’s workshop to the cross on Calvary Hill.

We will introduce many of the characters in Jesus’ life… his parentshis followers his persecutors and even some of the bystanders who saw him pass on his journey.

K&C will also provide some of the principal settings where many of the most dramatic events in the life of Jesus took place… And we will try to portray the man himself at various key points during his thirty-three years on earth.

In K&C’s history we’ve never attempted a project as special or unique as “THE LIFE OF JESUS” we look forward to some of you joining us on this epic journey back to The Holy Land and we begin with “The Nativity”

LoJ001 “The Holy Family”

A standing Joseph holds a lantern as his wife Mary nurses her new-born son.

LoJ002 “The Shepherds”

In the field around Bethlehem a group of shepherds were tending their flock when an angel of the Lord told them of the birth of Jesus. These three have traveled to the Manger to see the child and to spread the joyful news.

LoJ003 “The Three Wise Man”

In the Gospel of Mathew he says that these men came from the East to worship the Christ, born King of the Jews. With them they bring special gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh for the infant Jesus.

LoJ004 “The Animals”

Because there was no room at the Inn in Bethlehem the Holy Family only had a humble stable to rest in.

It was here, that Mary gave birth surrounded by simple farm animals… the oxen… the ass they brought with them… and some sheep.

LoJ005A “Standing Camel”

One of the dromedaries which accompanied the “Magi”

LoJ005B “Grazing Camel”

LOJ005C “Sitting Camel”

These figures along with our typical Middle Eastern buildings and (soon to be released) palm trees form a realistic and historically accurate scene that, to my knowledge, has never been reproduced in 1:30 scale before…

Available NOW!

SPECIAL NOTE: A substantial part of the income from “The LIFE OF JESUS” will be donated to a range of charities both in the United States and Hong Kong.

D. “Desert Village Additions”

To help set the scene for any kind of desert or middle eastern setting here are two more “Desert Village” pieces…

SP033 “The Stables”

A very versatile (like all the other DV structures) that can be utilized in a wide variety of settings and historical periods.

SP034 “The Watch Tower”

A key feature of any small village or town in the Middle and Near East was the Watchtower. From this high vantage point any strangers could be seen as they approached the village… and if necessary alarms could be sounded. Watchtowers were often used a temporary store houses for grain or occasionally as the local jail for wrong-doers and trouble makers! Our K&C towers comes in two separate pieces which easily combine to make a tall and imposing structure.

AVAILABILITY: Mid November

A. “Sons of the Empire”

This is the beginning of an occasional new series that will focus on the soldiers of the British Empire during its zenith between 1880 and the beginning of the Fist World War. It will portray Infantry, Cavalry and, occasionally, Artillery as they would have appeared on parade (and in the field) at that time.

Our first small release shows three members of one of British India’s most famous cavalry regiment’s… “Skinner’s Horse”

SOE001 “Skinner’s Horse Indian Subahdar”

Raised in 1803 by Capt. James Skinner the Regiment, by 1903, became known as the 1st. Duke of York’s Own Lancers (Skinner’s Horse).

Our first mounted figure shows a “Subahdar” (or First Lieutenant) in parade dress.

SOE002 “Skinner’s Horse Lancer

Carrying a long, steel-tipped bamboo lance complete with cavalry pennant this Lancer looks great alone… or in multiples!

And now for a wee Christmas surprise…

AK058 (SL) “ROMMEL’S DESERT TAXI”

During the war in North Africa, Erwin Rommel believed in being in as many places as he could, in meeting as many of his men and commanders as possible and seeing for himself what the situation was really like… either in or behind the frontline.

He made ample use of the Luftwaffe’s resources to get him all over the battlefield and

his command.

Among his most useful “Desert Taxis”, as he often referred to them, was the Messerschmitt 108 “Taifun”. Designed and developed in the 1930’s by Willy Messerschmitt this little 4-seater was the fore runner of the world-famous Me.109 fighter.

Our Afrika Korps versions is in typical worn and weathered Luftwaffe tropical paint scheme of dark mottle over sand colour. Through the clear canopy you can see a fully detailed cockpit.

Gunther Rall (1918-2009) was the third most successful fighter ace in history with 275 victories (241 on the Eastern Front). He flew over 600 combat missions, was shot down 8 times and wounded 3.

He claimed all of his victories in the Me.109.

After the war he rejoined the “new” Luftwaffe in 1955 rising to the rank of Generalleutnant before retiring. In 2004 he wrote his memoirs and died, aged 91 earlier in 2009.

CRW 25 91st HIGHLANDER TO COMPLIMENT THE THIN RED LINE

NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETLY NEW.

THE BATTLE FOR ALMA HEIGHTS

There are many great battles that took place in the Crimean campaign here with the King & Country UK Exclusive we are looking at the early battle of the Alma Heights.

Here is a great write up from Britsih battles that gives a great account of the battle and its outcome for the rest of the campaign.

The allied army (British, French and Turkish) began the march south from the landing site on 19th September 1854. The French army marched by the coast with the Turkish contingent in its midst. The British in two columns took the inland flank. The Light Brigade of cavalry provided a screen to the front and left flank. Ships of the British and French navies sailed parallel and in advance of the armies.
A skirmish took place as the allied army crossed the Bulganek on the first day of the 25 mile march to Sevastopol. As the Russians withdrew from the hills beyond the river Lord Lucan sought to pursue them with the Light Brigade but was ordered to withdraw by Lord Raglan. The allied armies encamped on the high ground beyond the river.

It was on the River Alma that the Russian general, Prince Menshikov, resolved to make his stand, taking advantage of the high ground along the south bank.

The axis of the advance was the post road which followed the coastline from Eupatoria in the North of the Crimea to Sevastopol. The country was open rolling grassland enabling the troops to march on either side of the road.

On 20th September 1854 the allied armies continued their march in the same formations. At about midday a warship steaming in advance of the armies opened a bombardment on the shore. The armies reach the top of one of the low ridges that lay along the line of march and the valley of the Alma opened before them.

Three villages lay along the near bank of the river; Almatamak in front of the French; Bourliouk in the centre of the advance and Tarkhanlar to the left of the British. The post road crossed the Alma to the inland side of Bourliouk and ascended into the hills beyond the river.

Along the high ground on the far side of the Alma lay the Russian Army in strength intending to give battle in defence of Sevastopol. The main body of Menshikov’s force lay on Kourgané Hill in front of the British Army’s centre, covered by a battery of 8 heavy siege guns at the front of its position. These guns were the focal point of the Russian defence and became known as the “Great Russian Battery” or the “Greater Redoubt”. Immediately beyond Bourliouk the Russian reserves occupied a hill with a telegraph station. The post road to Sevastopol lay in the valley between Kourgané Hill and Telegraph Hill.

From Bourliouk to the coast, opposite the French line of advance, the south bank of the Alma became a cliff face. An accessible road crossed the river from Almatamak, ascending the cliff. Near the river mouth a steep path climbed the cliff face. The Russian presence on the high ground above this cliff was slight.
Menshikov’s leadership was uninspired and lacking in vigour. The Russians took little trouble to fortify their positions. The heavy guns on Kourgané Hill were fronted by a low parapet intended to stop the guns from rolling down the hill rather than for protection. No works had been built to keep the French off the coastal high ground or to protect the Russian troops from naval bombardment.

The Allied plan, agreed between Raglan and St Arnaud that morning was for the French to begin the attack under cover of the fleet’s guns.

Bosquet’s Division stormed up the coastal path and the Almatamak road. Canrobert crossed the Alma to the west of Almatamak and climbed Telegraph Hill, sending his guns up the Almatamak road. The Russian piquets set fire to Bourliouk and withdrew across the river and up the hill.

General St Arnaud sent word to Lord Raglan requesting that the British now launch their assault on the main Russian positions and Raglan issued the orders to his divisional commanders to attack.

There now occurred an incident of extraordinary eccentricity. Leaving his generals to make the assault Lord Raglan led his staff across the river and rode up onto a promontory below Telegraph Hill. Raglan watched the British attack from a position behind the Russian lines.

The British infantry advanced towards the river in a line stretching from Bourliouk nearly to Tarkhanlar; the Second Division on the right and the Light Division on the left. The Third Division supported the Second and the First Division the Light. The Fourth Division remained behind the left wing. The Light Brigade of cavalry guarded the inland flank.

The battery of heavy Russian guns on Kourgané Hill opened fire on the advancing British infantry with considerable effect both physical and psychological.

The burning village of Bourliouk caused considerable difficulty, the brigades of the 2nd Division being forced to bypass the village on either side to reach the river. The brigade of General Adams reached the river to the East of Bourliouk and found itself at the base of Telegraph Hill. General Pennefather’s brigade passed to the West of the village. His third regiment, the 95th, joined Codrington’s Fusilier Brigade and took part in the assault with that formation, leaving Pennefather with the 30th and 55th Regiments.
Codrington’s regiments became the apex of the advance up to the Russian Battery. Two regiments of the Division’s second brigade were held back to protect the army’s inner flank. The remaining regiment of that brigade, the 19th, also joined Codrington’s attack so that he led forward five regiments rather than the three of his brigade (7th, 19th, 23rd, 33rd and 95th).

The British infantry advanced to the river and began to cross, finding the water to be fordable at almost every point (it is not clear whether this fact had been discovered before the battle). The far side of the river comprised a steep six foot bank which caused a halt in the advance, partly because of its physical obstacle, partly because it provided cover from the bombardment. The divisional commander of the Light Division, Sir George Brown rode up the bank and urged his soldiers to follow. The division surged out of the river and scaled the hill beyond.

The ground on the hillside was terraced and walled making it difficult for the regiments to reform after the river crossing and the British troops attacked up the hill in some disorder. The regiments reached the Russian Battery to find that the guns had been hastily limbered up and were being removed to the rear. It is the view of General Hamley, who served as an artillery officer in the Crimea, that the precipitous retreat of these guns saved the British regiments from suffering appalling losses in the final stages of the assault.

Even so Codrington’s brigade was in a precarious position. There was little order and casualties were mounting particularly among the officers. Large masses of Russian infantry were bearing down on the battery. Many of the British soldiers retreated back down the hill towards the river.

Raglan’s position on the lower slopes of Telegraph Hill prevented him from exercising proper control over the assault by his army. If matters had gone according to plan the First Division should have been on hand to support Codrington’s troops. It was not. The Duke of Cambridge was slow in ordering his brigades of Guards and Highlanders to cross the Alma. Fortunately the Quartermaster General, Lieutenant General Airey had not accompanied his commander and was on hand to urge Cambridge forward. Even so the First Division was too far back to support the Light Division at the moment of crisis.

The First Division moved forward to the River Alma with General Bentinck’s Guards Brigade on the right and Sir Colin Campbell’s Highland Brigade on the left. The two brigades were formed in accordance with precedent with the senior regiments on the right within each brigade, the next senior regiment on the left and the junior regiment in the centre: from right to left the Grenadier Guards, the Scots Fusilier Guards, the Coldstream Guards, 42nd Highlanders, 91st Highlanders and the 79th Highlanders. The length of the line, substantially longer than that of the Light Division, extended beyond the Russian inland flank. Differences in the depth of the river and the height and steepness of the bank affected the speed with which these regiments were able to cross the river and begin the ascent of the hill.

The adjutant of the Grenadiers, Captain Higginson, described in his memoirs how his commander, Colonel Hood, noted the confused advance of the Fusilier Brigade as it attacked the Russian Battery and determined to keep his battalion under strict control. The Grenadiers formed in line before leaving the river and advanced up the hill firing two volleys at the Russian infantry on the hillside causing them to retreat.

At the top of the hill the 7th Royal Fusiliers, under the leadership of Lieutenant Colonel Lacey Yea, on the right flank of Codrington’s brigade, had not retreated. Much of the rest of the brigade was falling back and the Scots Fusilier Guards in the centre of Bentinck’s brigade was largely swept back down the hill to the river by the flood of men.

The other two Guards battalions, the Grenadiers and the Coldstream, continued on up the hill and retook the Russian Battery. The 42nd Highlanders outstripping the other regiments of the Highland Brigade outflanked the Battery on the left; the other two Highland regiments coming up on the far flank.

During the attack on the Russian Battery on Kourgané Hill the remaining regiments of the 2nd Division, the 55th, 30th and 47th, attacked up Telegraph Hill, supported by the 41st and 49th.

British gun batteries crossed the bridge beyond Bourliouk and bombarded the Russian regiments on Telegraph Hill. A Royal Horse Artillery battery climbed up onto the hill and fired into the Russian infantry from the right of the Guards Brigade. Other British guns came up on the flanks of the regiments of the Second Division and fired into the retreating Russian regiments. In one instance a battery outstripped its gunners, following on foot, and the guns were brought into action by the officers.

The Third Division crossed the Alma in support of the Highland Brigade and the Light Brigade of cavalry moved forward on the inland flank.

Cleared from the Battery and under threat from the attacks on Kourgané and Telegraph Hills, now fully supported by artillery fire, the Russian infantry fell back and left the battlefield, marching away towards Sevastopol.

The only allied cavalry on the field, Cardigan’s Light Brigade, under the direct command of the Cavalry Division commander, Lord Lucan, pressed for permission to pursue the retreating Russians, but were specifically ordered by Lord Raglan to remain with the army.

The allied armies camped beyond the battle field while Menshikov led his army back along the post road to Sevastopol.

The French force took little part in the battle. Bosquet’s division had contact with the Russians. Canrobert’s division in the centre made little use of its position to influence the attack on Kourgané Hill.

This valiant effort did not go without its sacrifice.

British casualties were set at 2,002.
British regimental casualties were:
Royal Artillery: 3 officers and 30 men.
Grenadier Guards: 3 officers and 127 men
Coldstream Guards: 2 offices and 27 men

CRW 26 Coldstream Guard officer with regimental flag.

You can tell by his face he is leading his men with intention into the unknown. Is our guy one of the only two officers of this regiment that did not survive?

CRW 27 Coldstream Guard Advancing

As in those days the regiments marched into gun fire with no fear. CRW 27 shows a Coldtream guard marching with his officers against a barrage of Russian fire.

CRW 28 Coldstream Guard to Port

In this second or third row CRW 28 is just as keen as the front line to see some action.

CRW 29 Coldstream Guard Standing firing

Now advance close enough to get the Russians in range this Coldstream Guard has his first shot, hopingto make it count.

The next wave of Crimean is released in December 2009 with a launch at the TOY SOLDIER SHOW LONDON on the 4th Dec 2009. They will be available for pre order as of the week begining 5th October 2009.

OCTOBER DISPATCHES 2009

OCTOBER 2009

DISPATCHES

I’m actually writing this month’s “DISPATCHES” on Thursday 17th.of September… Tomorrow afternoon we fly out (Helen, Patrick and me) to San Francisco and a weekend with the good folks at Sierra Toy Soldiers and their all-new store in the very heart of Los Gatos, California. Then on Monday and it’s off to Chicago where Gordon will join us on Tuesday.

So the next 3 1/2 weeks will be a bit of a whirlwind and I thought I better sit down and write “DISPATCHES” here in HK before, as they say, “going on the road”. So, here goes…

1.      COMING IN OCTOBER…

A. THE RAF and THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN

The response to the announcement of this new series in last month’s “DISPATCHES” was simply awesome! We sold out of our first 400 Hawker Hurricanes in less than 24 hours!!!

And, it seems, most collectors who want a Hurricane also want the add-on “personality” pilots and ground crew as well. That’s wonderful news for K&C and just goes to show the potential popularity of Air Force themed subjects… And, before you ask there’s a lot more already in the pipeline… British (Spitfire and Typhoon), American (P51B and P47 Thunderbolt) and, of course, German (Me109, FW190 and JU87 “Stuka”) to name but a few plus assorted diorama accessories, vehicles and figures! And a few surprises…

For the moment though there are these great “start-up” sets and figures…

RAF001 “Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding”

The head of Fighter Command and the leading architect of the RAF’s victory over the Luftwaffe. K&C’s figure shows him in a typical pose paying a visit to one of his front line squadrons during the Battle.

RAF002 “Squadron Leader Douglas Bader”

A flying legend in the RAF. Bader lost both legs in a pre war flying accident but fought to return to operational flying at the outbreak of the war.

During the Battle he commanded 242 Squadron made up of mostly Canadian pilots. Bader had that fiercely competitive spirit that fills all fighter pilots. He shot down 22 enemy aircraft before being shot down himself in 1941. He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war in the infamous Colditz in eastern Germany. Castle

RAF003Flying Officer “Moggy” Cattermole & Reilly”

One of the leading characters in author Derek Robinson’s “Piece of Cake” novel about the Fall of France and the Battle of Britain. “Moggy” is a “nasty piece of work” but a great fighter pilot! “Reilly” is the squadron mascot.

RAF004 “Sgt. Pilot Ginger Lacey”

James “Ginger” Lacey was one of the NCO pilots who made up a quarter of Fighter Command’s strength during the Battle. Just 23 years old he destroyed at least 15 German aircraft (probably more) in the summer of 1940 and survived the War.

RAF005 “Flight Lieutenant Sandy Johnstone”

Originally a civilian navigation instructor and part-time pilot with 602 (City of Glasgow) Auxiliary Squadron, Johnson flew Spitfires during the Battle first as a flight Lieutenant before becoming Squadron Leader in July 1940.

RAF006 “Waiting… and Ready!”

Two RAF pilots on readiness await that jangling phone call that will send them running for their aircraft. A very typical “1940” scene.

RAF007 “Hawker HURRICANE MK.1”

One of the two most famous British aircraft that won the Battle of Britain. Less famous than the more graceful Spitfire, the Hurricane carried eight .303 machine guns and could absorb an amazing amount of punishment.

Twice as many Hurricanes fought in the Battle than Spits and although slower than the enemy 109 it was still very popular with its pilots.

K&C’s model is in the markings of 501 (County of London) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force and has 3 “kills” to its credit. Each aircraft has fixed undercarriage… a detachable, sliding canopy and a seated pilot at the controls.

Special Note: Only 400 models of this particular Hurricane are planned for production.

RAF008 “RAF Ground Crew Set”

Without the invaluable help, effort and support of the RAF’s ground crew the Battle of Britain would easily have been lost!

Here, 3 Aircraftsmen make ready to get another Hurricane or Spitfire back into the air. Set includes a Corporal Armourer and 2 x Leading Aircraftsmen.

RAF009 “Flying Officer & Trophy”

“Keith Sutton”, a New Zealander, with a “souvenir” tail piece from a Me. 110 he shot down.

RAF010 “MG Sports Car Set”

Fighter pilots and fast sports cars seem to go well together. Here, a young, rakish Flight Lieutenant sits in his nifty little British racing-green MG Sports Car enjoying a well-earned break from shooting down all those “nasty huns!”

From the defensive tactics of Fighter Command in the summer of 1940 we move forward to 1943 and the offensive operations of the RAF’s mighty “Bomber Command”.

Here we present three of Bomber command’s best known pilots… All of whom flew with 617 Squadron and took part in the famous “DAMBUSTERS” raid on the great dams of Western Germany in May 1943.

RAF011 “Wing Commander Guy Gibson V.C.”

Accompanied by his faithful Black Labrador “Nigger”, Gibson led the raid and was one of Bomber Command’s most experienced pilots at just 24 years old! He was awarded the Victoria Cross for the exploit. Sadly, he was killed on operations over Holland later in the war flying a Mosquito.

RAF012 “Flight Lieutenant Les Munro”

One of Gibson’s best Flight Leaders and a New Zealander who volunteered to fly with the RAF. He is one of a handful of survivors still living who took part in the epic raid.

RAF013 “Flight Lieutenant Harold “Mickey” Martin”

A great Australian bomber pilot and another of Gibson’s key flight leaders. He survived the war and went on to a long and very successful career in the peactime RAF eventually becoming an Air Vice Marshal.

SPECIAL NOTE: These are just a few of the great RAF figures, aircraft and diorama accessories K&C has planned… look out for more in the coming months!

AVAILABILITY:   RAF001-006, 008-013 NOW!

                                RAF007 -- Mid October

ACHTUNG!ACHTUNG!ACHTUNG!

B. From the skies of wartorn Europe in 1940 and 1943 to the winter landscape of the Ardennes

BBG022 “Sd.Kfz 251/22 “Pakwagen” Ausf. D” (Winter)

Boy what a mouthful!!!

After we made the first summer version we thought “this could look equally good as a Battle of the Bulge vehicle”. And so, we designed three new figures, made a few changes and did a completely different winter/snow paint scheme.

Available Now!

BBG021 “Jagdpanzer IV”

The Jagdpanzer IV was the final development of the tank destroyer on the chassis of a standard tank. Development of this vehicle was championed by General Heinz Guderian when he was Inspector General of Panzer Forces in 1942/43. It was intended to replace STUG III’s and IV’s and first appeared in late 1944. It was used extensively during “The Battle of The Bulge”. Our model is typical of one of those attached to the 116th. Panzer Division. A winter-clad tank commander is included.

BBG023 “Steyr 1500 FunkKraftwagen”

Another mouthful… but a great little vehicle… and useful too! Radio communications were and are vital to any modern army and in 1944 the German Army was no exception.

This great looking little truck was built on the well-proved Steyr 1500 chassis. Here in its original Wehrmacht/factory finish gray it’s got a light frosting of snow as well as a battle-worn dust and mud layer too. Seen inside the cab is a very, very cold driver!

BBG024 “Attack”

And doing just that are these 3 “Volksgrenadiers” making an attack on an American position. All are in heavy winter greatcoats with, in two cases, camouflage smocks on top.

BBG025 “Rifle Support”

An advancing “Volksgrenadier” shouts a warning as his mate fires a well-aimed round at some retreating GI’s.

BBG026 “Winter Rifleman”

A great little single figure character study of a “Volksgrenadier”… Rifle on one shoulder and Panzerfaust on the other… this soldier has seen his fill of war…

BBG027 “Advancing Rifleman”

War has to go on however and this other single rifleman is moving stealthily forward on an enemy location…

BBG028 “Covering Fire”

Lying on the frozen hard ground of the Ardennes this MG42 gunner provides back up fire support to some of his comrades moving ahead.

AVAILABILITY: Mid October

C. “Talking of the Battle of The Bulge and Christmas…?”

Well, we weren’t actually but who cares… With last year’s Christmas set of GI’s feeding two little Belgian orphans we neglected to add… a Santa Claus.

And now here he is… or at least a GI who’s made an effort to dress up as Santa using an old, discarded and beat up greatcoat and… a pot of red paint.

XM009-01 G.I. Santa illustrates just how far some U.S. servicemen would go to bring a smile to some little kid’s face. Our “Christmas Hero” has managed to scrounge, beg, borrow (or steal) a few goodies for the kids and his buddies… He’s even stuck some holly and berries onto his helmet! Even in wartime Christmas is always Christmas!

D. “Alternative Christmas Fun”

From Christmas in 1944 to a little celebration up at the North Pole…

XM009-02 “Mr. & Mrs. Claus having fun!”

All the toys are madethe presents are packed… the elves have gone to bed and Santa’s sled is loaded. He’s about to head off on Christmas Eve and, to celebrate, Mr. & Mrs. Claus enjoy a little jig around the workshop floor.

There’s a long night ahead but for a brief moment Santa and his Missus can enjoy each other’s happiness. The two-figure set also includes the tall candle stand.

AVAILABILITY: Late October

E. “And now for something completely different…”

Monty Python were maybe onto something because after visiting Mr. & Mrs. Santa Claus up at the North Pole we’ve landed in Ancient China… or at least a few hundred years ago…

IC035 “The Hunting Set”

Here two members of the Emperor’s Bodyguard Regiment are out hunting in the Palace’s own Royal Hunting Grounds.

As one guardsman holds aloft his rabbit victim the mounted guardsman is after bigger game… a local deer.

All these pieces make a colourful addition to this popular collection.

AVAILABILITY: Mid October

2.      COMING IN NOVEMBER

This NOVEMBER promises to be one of the most diverse month’s in K&C’s history… read on

A. “NULLI SECUNDUS or SECOND TO NONE”

The motto of The Coldstream Guards and one of K&C’s most popular Napoleonic series… 12 brand-new Coldstreamers provide reinforcements for our earlier British Guards Regiments… These new soldiers (all except one small 2-figures set) are sold individually and, for the most part, illustrate troops either a) moving into the line or b) back at barracks on parade or even c) on the march. The choice is yours!

NA184 “Mounted Officer”

NA185 “Walking Flagbearer”

NA186 “Marching Officer w/ Sword”

NA187 “Marching Sergeant”

NA188 “Marching Pioneer”

NA189 “Marching Guardsman”

NA190 “Guardsman At Attention”

NA191 “Saving The Boy”

Here, a veteran Guardsman steps out of the battle to carry his young wounded ensign back to the Surgeon’s tent…

NA192 “Camp Follower”

NA193 “Advancing Guardsman”

NA194 “Marching Flagbearer”

AVAILABILITY: Early November

This winter-version also has a detachable canvass cover for the troop compartment.

A towing hook at the rear of his vehicle is also suitable for pulling…

This MP is on the road, somewhere in Belgium or Luxembourg giving out directions (as MP’s like to do). He’s well-wrapped against the winter weather as well!

C. “DESERT

We begin the story with “the Nativity” but that is only the beginning… We will continue the story of Jesus through his childhood into his manhood and the journey from Bethlehem to Nazareth and to Jerusalem… From a carpenter’s workshop to the cross on Calvary Hill.

These three have journey eyed to the Manger to see the child and to spread the joyful news.

LoJ003 “The Three Wise Man”

In the Gospel of Mathew he says these men came from the East to worship the Christ, born King of the Jews. With them they bring gifts of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh for the infant Jesus.

These figures along with our typical Middle Eastern buildings and (soon to be released) palm trees form a realistic and historically accurate scene that, to my knowledge, has never been reproduced in 1:30 scale before… We look forward to your comments.

AVAILABILITY: Early November

SPECIAL NOTE: A substantial part of the income from “The LIFE OF JESUS” will be donated to a range of charities both in the United States and Hong Kong.

SEPTEMBER DISPATCHES HOT FROM KING & COUNTRY

by Tony Neville 3. September 2009 09:06

KING & COUNTRY DISPATCHES

SEPTEMBER 2009

SEPTEMBER for KING & COUNTRY means… CHICAGO! And CHICAGO means the “Old Toy Soldier Show” the biggest toy soldier show in the world… and the best. The reason I say that is because it lasts several days and brings together a huge number of dealers, visitors and manufacturers from all over the world. For 5 or 6 days (and nights) you eat, sleep, drink and talk toy soldiers morning, noon and into the wee small hours!

K&C has been taking part and going to the “Windy City” for almost 25 years and each show keeps getting better and better. We get to meet hundreds of K&C collectors and talk with them… dozens of dealers and fellow manufacturers. We get to show and preview our latest products plus we get to see what the competition is up to!

All in all it’s a blast and in a couple of weeks we… Helen, Gordon, Patrick and yours truly will be there along, I hope, with Martin from Kings X in San Antonio and Laura,

K&C’s co-founder and the lady who first suggested, “Hey, why don’t we start up our own toy soldier company!”

And the rest they say… is history… So, here goes with all the latest “scuttlebutt”

 1.      COMING IN SEPTEMBER…

 A. “ROMMEL’S REINFORCEMENTS”

Over the coming months we will be releasing quite a few new AFRIKA KORPS sets to build up our Axis forces in North Africa… Here are the first two…

 AK050 “Panzer III Tank”

A brand-new version of a now-retired, early AK release. This model has lots of extra detail, a great sand-weathered paint finish and comes with a half-body crew figure in the turret. It is in the marking of 15th Pz. Division.

AK051 “Afrika Korps Guardbox Special”

A neat little set of a typical German Sentry box and another all-new sculpt… a standing guard with rifle slung. Perfect to protect lonely desert airfields and other AK installations.

And at a great price!

IN THE UK APPROX 11TH SEPT

B. “BACK ON PARADE… BERLIN’38 STYLE”

When we retired our veteran LAH Parade figures recently we already had these new versions in the works…

Six LAH officers and men, restyled and resculpted, complete with marching-style back packs to fill out the ranks of any BERLIN’38 collection.

Plus there is a neat little display set as well.

 LAH103 “Nazi Eagles on Plinth”

In cities like Munich, Nuremburg and, of course, Berlin, street architecture was utilized by the Nazis to help “frame” their displays and rallies.

A pair of typical “Germanic” eagles in Golden/Brass colour surmount simple but elegant stone columns.

Dimensions:   Height: 21.5cm Base: 4.4cm x 3.8cm

LAH113 “LAH Officer At Attention”

LAH114 “LAH Marching w/ Sword”

LAH115 “LAH Presenting Arms”

LAH116 “LAH Marching w/ Rifle”

LAH117 “At Ease”

LAH118 “At Attention”

Special Note: All of these new LAH figures have, for the first time, the all-white belt, braces, crossbelts and backpacks.

IN THE UK APPROXAMTLY SEPT 11TH

 C. “VIVA IL DUCE!”

From pre-war Nazi Germany we travel through the Alps to Mussolini’s Fascist Italy.

This new series echoes K&C’s “BERLIN’38” and begins with a modest release of just eight figures and a great fighting vehicle.

For too long toy soldier and military miniature makers have neglected Germany’s Axis Allie. Well, not now. Although this first release is mostly parade, the inclusion of a small armoured assault gun points out that K&C will not confine our Italian forces to solely a “parade” role in any collection.

 IF001 “Mounted Mussolini”

The Italian Dictator in a familiar role as “First Corporal” of the Fascist State. “Il Duce” wears a beautifully tailored gray/green uniform and sits proudly on one of his favourite steeds saluting the troops.

Special Note: A standing saluting Mussolini is also in the works for later release.

IF002 “Consul General of the Chaplain’s Dept.”

The Church played an ambivalent role in Fascist politics… Some of the hierarchy were only too happy to join any movement that would combat the Communist and Socialist opposition. Our figure portrays a senior army chaplain giving the Fascist salute.

 IF003 “Marching Officer”

 IF004 “Marching Standard Bearer”

The Fascists borrowed many design features for their badges, banners and flags from Imperial Rome… as we can see here.

 IF005 “Marching Rifleman”

This soldier is wearing “mixed rig”… typical of Italian Forces in both the war in Ethiopia in 1936 and later in North Africa. It was quite usual to see the gray/green jacket worn with the lightweight Khaki trousers and gray/green leggings.

The Italian sun helmet was also widely worn by all ranks.

 IF006 “At Attention Bugler”

 IF007 “At Ease Soldier”

This particular pose is very Italian… relaxed but ready!

 IF008 “Officer with Map”

A senior officer (a Colonel) in all gray/green uniform, black shirt and ski cap consulting his map.

IN THE UK AS OF APPROX SEPT 11TH

 IF009 “Semovente M40-75/18”

A neat little, self propelled gun in action somewhere in North Africa between 1940 and 1943. Two-tone desert camouflage and sitting commander, note the captured Bren Gun replacing the Italian Light Machine Gun.

 AVAILABILITY: Mid September

SPECIAL NOTE: More Italian Forces, including action pieces, are already in the works for release in 2010.

 D. “THE KNIGHTS OF THE TEMPLE”

It’s a gigantic historical leap from Mussolini’s Fascist Forces back in time to Medieval Knights but we’ll make it anyway…

Templar Knights belonged to a holy military order that was founded in 1120 to protect pilgrims making their way to and through The Holy Land.

Taking lifelong vows of chastity… poverty and obedience they were famous for their fighting skills and battlefield prowess. Knights journeyed from all over Western Europe to join the order and for almost 200 years they were a powerful force throughout the period of The Crusades.

 MK062 “Sir Arthur De Mountford”

An Anglo/ Norman knight from the mid 12th. Century.

MK063 “Wounded Templar Set”

One “Templar” supports a seriously wounded other…

 MK064 “Standing Saracen Archer”

MK065 “Mounted Charging Saracen with Sword”

 MK066 “Mounted Templar with Banner”

 MK067 “Crusader Archer Set”

 MK068 “Fighting Priest with Axe”

Not all Medieval clerics believed in “turning the other cheek!”

 MK069 “Standing Man-at-Arms”

A Scottish soldier on Crusade.

 MK070 “Dressing for Battle”

A knight is made ready for combat assisted by his kneeling squire. On a small nearby table rests his dagger, helmet, a flagon of ale and his shield.

 MK071 “Crusader Tent #1”

An all-new version of a typical medieval tent which K&C produced many years ago.

 MK072 “Templar Grand Master”

Jean de Falaise… ruthless, clever and a devoted Templar.

 MK073 “Templar Standard Bearer”

Duke Thierry de Caen-Bayeux, nephew of the Grand Master and killed at Acre in 1186.

 MK074 “Crusader Tent #2”

 MK075 “Crusader Tent #3”

 AVAILABILITY: Mid September

2.      COMING IN OCTOBER…

A. October sees the release of a brand-new series honouring the men of Britain’s Royal Air Force during the Second World War.

This first release primarily focuses on “The Battle of Britain” which was fought in the skies over southern Britain throughout the Summer and into the Autumn of 1940…

France had fallen, most of Western Europe was in German hands and the might of Hitler’s Luftwaffe was to descend on a lonely, beleaguered Britain fighting for its life.

Hitler knew that if he was to successfully invade the little island Kingdom he had to smash the Hurricanes and Spitfires of the Royal Air Force first. The fate of democracy and what was left of the Free World hung, for those few short months, in the balance. All that stood between the Nazis and their all-too-real threat of world domination was a relative handful of young fighter pilots and just over 50 squadrons of Hawker Hurricanes and Supermarine Spitfires.

Next year, 2010, marks the 70th.Anniversary of one of the major turning points of the Second World War. Journey back with K&C to the dark days of 1940 and this epic aerial battle that defeated Hitler for the very first time…

Introducing the first of an ongoing series…

RAF001 “Air Chief Marshall Sir Hugh Dowding”

The head of Fighter Command and the leading architect of the RAF’s victory over the Luftewaffe.

K&C’s model is in the markings of 501 (County

Special Note: Only 400 models of this particular Hurricane are planned for production.

PLEASE NOTE THE NEW PLANE IS MADE FROM POLYSTONE AND METAL IT IS TRUE 1/30TH SCALE

DIMENSIONS:-

LENGTH 325MM

WIDTH 410MM

HEIGHT 100 MM

PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE ARE APPROX SIZES

RAF008 “RAF Ground Crew Set”

Without the invaluable help, effort and support of the RAF’s ground crew the Battle of Britain would easily have been lost!

Here, 3 Aircraftmen make ready to get another Hurricane or Spitfire back into the air. Set includes a Corporal Armourer and 2 x Leading aircraftmen.

AVAILABILITY: Early October

3.      BEING RETIRED THIS MONTH

Can you believe it guys… just one set is being put out to pasture!

WS075 “Summer Commander’s Conference”

And that is that for another month. As I said at the beginnings of this month’s DISPATCHES… Chicago is just a couple of weeks away… I can’t wait for it. All of us at K&C who are going look forward to seeing quite a few of you at the show.

Until then very best personal wishes to everyone
